FDM 3D printing – strong functional parts in engineering plastics

FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) builds the part layer by layer from melted plastic filament. It’s the most widely used technology for functional parts – strong, affordable and with the widest choice of materials.

How FDM works

A nozzle melts plastic filament and lays it down in thin layers, usually 0.2 mm. The outer walls are solid and the inside is filled with a pattern – the infill – that you choose.

Strengths

A wide choice of materials (PLA, PETG, ASA, TPU, carbon fibre), build volume up to about 25 × 25 × 25 cm per part and a low price even for larger parts. Perfect for spare parts, fixtures and housings.

Limitations

Layers show on the surface and the part is slightly weaker between layers. Very small details come out better with SLA (resin).

Walls and infill

An FDM part’s strength comes mainly from its outer walls – more walls often add more strength than higher infill. For most functional parts 15–40% infill is enough, while parts to be drilled, tapped or carrying heavy loads may need more.

Orientation matters

Because the part is weakest between layers, we orient it so the load runs along the layers. A hook printed lying down is therefore much stronger than the same hook printed standing up.

FDM suits

  • Spare and replacement parts
  • Mounts, holders and adapters
  • Enclosures and electronics housings
  • Fixtures and tools in production
  • Flexible parts in TPU

Frequently asked questions

How strong is an FDM part?

It depends on material, infill and orientation. PETG and carbon-fibre-reinforced materials handle a lot – ask us about the load.

How smooth is the surface?

Layers are 0.2 mm. Matte materials hide layer lines well.

FDM or SLA?

FDM for function and size, SLA for small, detailed parts with a smooth surface.
