Preparing a file for 3D printing – tips for better parts

A well-prepared file gives faster, cheaper and stronger prints. Here are the key points before you upload.

Export in the right format

STL is the most common. 3MF also stores units, colours and several parts in one file. Check that the model is exported in millimetres – some programs save in inches or metres. In the calculator you can change the unit if the size looks wrong.

Wall thickness and details

Walls thinner than about 0.8 mm end up weak or disappear. Text and small details should be at least 0.5 mm high and wide to show clearly.

Tolerances for parts that fit together

Allow 0.2–0.3 mm clearance between parts that need to slide or snap together. Press fits need less. If the fit is critical, we’re happy to make a test piece.

Orientation and supports

Parts are strongest along the layers. Overhangs steeper than about 45° need supports, which means more material and a slightly rougher underside. We choose the orientation for you.

Common mistakes

Models made of several overlapping bodies, surfaces without thickness and holes in the mesh are the most common errors. Many CAD programs can merge bodies before export – use that feature. Export at a high enough resolution that round shapes don’t turn angular, but not so high that the file gets needlessly large.

Checklist before uploading

  • Millimetres as the unit
  • A closed model with no holes in the surface
  • Walls at least 0.8 mm
  • 0.2–0.3 mm clearance between moving parts
  • One file per part or one 3MF with all parts
Instant price: upload your file to the calculator – choose material, colour and infill and see the price in seconds.

Frequently asked questions

My file is broken – can you fix it?

Yes, we fix minor errors in the model during the check. Bigger errors we fix in CAD by agreement.

Can I send STEP?

Yes. We price STEP files by hand within 1 working day.

What if the model is too big?

We split it into several parts that are glued or screwed together, or manufacture it through a partner.

Tell us about your project

Send a photo, a sketch or a few measurements – you get a fixed price before we start.

We reply in writing in English or Swedish, usually within 1–2 working days.
