SLA 3D printing in resin – fine detail and a smooth surface
SLA cures liquid resin with light, layer by layer. The result is sharp detail and a smooth surface that’s hard to achieve with other methods.
How SLA works
A thin layer of resin is cured by UV light in exactly the right shape. Layers are only 0.05 mm, so the surface is almost completely smooth. After printing the part is washed and post-cured.
When SLA is the right choice
Figures, miniatures, jewellery, dental models, small gears and details where FDM layers would show. Transparent parts too.
Limitations
The build volume is smaller and standard resin is more brittle than engineering plastics. For loaded parts there are tougher resins – or FDM.
Post-processing
After printing the part is washed in alcohol and post-cured with UV light for full strength. Supports are removed and small marks from the support points are sanded if needed. The result is a clean part ready to prime or use straight away.
Hollow models
Large solid resin parts get heavy and expensive. The model can often be hollowed with a wall of a couple of millimetres and small drain holes, saving material without affecting the look. We assess whether it suits your model.

Frequently asked questions
How small can the details be?
Details down to about 0.2–0.3 mm show clearly.
Can resin be painted?
Yes, resin is easy to prime and paint – perfect for figures.
Is SLA more expensive than FDM?
For small parts the difference is small. For large parts FDM is cheaper.
